They love making purely delicious chocolates, but Original Beans wasn't created just to add bars to your pantry, behind each bar there is a great project and many values.

Did you know?

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of different varieties of cocoa on our planet! Like other fruit trees, cocoa absorbs the flavors of the environment in which it grows. Since 2008, our team of bean experts has been traveling to the most remote places on the planet to bring us the most unique cocoa beans. Savor with Original Beans, through the enormous variety, and discover forgotten cocoas from places deserving protection and preserve them!

We protect biodiversity

One of the main pillars of our chocolate is to give back to nature more than we get in order to have a regenerative company. To make this possible, one of our important activities is to monitor and measure local impact to be able to make effective decisions. Among the many environmental and social factors that are measured, two of the main ones are biodiversity monitoring - the count of species of fauna and flora in the forests that are protected in the origins of the cocoa varieties and the monitoring of trees that are planted to reforest areas that were damaged in the past.

Small steps, big differences

It takes a cocoa tree 3 to 5 years to produce its first harvest. After that, each tree produces around 1,000 beans per year, which is enough to produce just 1 kg of chocolate. For us, this is a good reminder that chocolate is something we should appreciate and never take for granted.

With every bar of chocolate you buy, we plant a tree. You can see how much has been achieved with everyone's help on the #onebaronetree website. To track your tree, scan the QR code or enter the C-code from the back of the bar.

We protect life

The communities of the villages in almost all of our origins own or manage ancestral forests. We map and record in our databases only the areas that officially belong directly to the community or to the producing families. We also record the fauna and flora. Our work with the communities, our payments but also our cultivation plans, training and awareness work significantly reduce the chances of these forests being deforested. If they are under an official protection system we declare them as "protected" (more on our website). Otherwise we declare them as "preserved".

We preserve the Arhuaco tribes in Colombia, and we help farmers obtain organic certificates in all our origins.

In the Sacred Valley of Cusco, we help conserve the endangered condor, the world's largest flying bird 🦅, with a small, family-run sanctuary. In Virunga Park, DR Congo, we support the protection of the last remaining mountain gorillas 🦍. In Udzungwa National Park in Tanzania, we protect elephants and rhinoceroses by strategically placing beehives so they don't get scared when they encounter them (they're very scary) and keep them, the people, and the native flora safe, while helping to naturally pollinate them. And on the Costa Esmeraldas in Ecuador, we help preserve the cloud forest, home to the silky tree frog 🐸.

These are just some of the species we aim to conserve.

We also fund other projects founded by trusted local organizations that rehabilitate injured animals, protect and raise awareness about endangered species.

🐾🦋 We protect 8 of the most biodiverse points in the world.

We don't want to leave a trace!

Plastic pollution is one of the biggest environmental problems we face these days. We don't want to be a part of it!

Since 2012, our 70g tablets have come in a wrapper made from wood fibers from renewable resources.

Even though it may not look like it, the wrapper (held by the founder of Original beans - Philipp Kauffmann in the photo) is 100% compostable in your own garden!

Opportunities and empowerment

For centuries, the role of women has been primarily to be housewives and mothers. It is still not easy for women, especially in regions like eastern Congo. Girls are always the first to leave school to support the family. Domestic violence against women is a normal part of everyday life. Together with local partners, we are trying to create an alternative for women to cocoa. Our Femmes de Virunga 55% chocolate is dedicated to them and the purchase of this bar strengthens local cocoa farmers in their leadership role for peace and prosperity in eastern Congo. Since the start of the project in 2008, these strong women have planted more than one million cocoa trees and approximately 40 thousand shade trees. In November 2016, they founded the world's first women's cocoa cooperative.

At Original Beans we offer high, direct, stable and secure prices to cocoa producing families and, therefore, we guarantee a vital income, a positive perspective for the future of all our farmers and their families. As a result, we can report zero incidents of child labor and instead the empowerment of hundreds of young farmers, including women. Generating a decent income for families is a visible change in children's opportunities through sustainable development even in conflict areas.

Pride and values

Producing high-quality chocolate is more than a source of pride for us, it is our duty if we want to respect the quality of the extraordinary varieties of cocoa that nature offers us and the efforts of its producers. Maintaining its high quality and natural flavors is the key to preserving cocoa, its natural environment, its fauna and the value of the effort of the producing families, receiving a decent and stable income.

Some of the recognitions are:

- Great Taste Producer

- Academy of Chocolate Winner

- BOOM - Best of organic market awards.

- 8 of the world's 50 best restaurants use Original Beans.

These awards recognize the value of the origin of cocoa and the effort of the producers. We are only stubborn in preserving this value from its origin to our palate.
